Since the nectarines were at absolutely peak ripeness tonight -- when the aroma's so overwhelmingly mouthwatering you know they'll start to go bad tomorrow -- they were first on the dinner menu.

This, of course, got the plates all juicy, which can be a problem for youngsters who don't like mixing their foods. Bryn thus decided to request a pristine extra plate for the rest of her meal, which she enjoyed quite thoroughly. However, her mood turned abruptly when informed that yes, indeed, she would have to put both plates in the dishwasher. Sudden sheer outrage:
Why do I always have to clean up everything I use? That's not fair!
Of course, she did eventually take care of the plates, but not until after a suitable period of further righteous indignation.

It's the principle of the thing, you see.

We had a lovely fourth of July weekend. Yesterday we went to Horseneck Beach, where Bryn, upon seeing a flock of seagulls, ran gleefully into their midst, informing us that she wanted to "scare the eagles." (Sound familiar?)

Later on, we went to a parade and a fair with Kathy's friend Ellen and her daughter Margaret, whom the kids were meeting for the first time. Maya, telling her grandparents about the day on the phone, had this to say:
And our best friend was with us. Her name...[turns to Kathy] What was her name?
Just when we think they are maturing too fast, they make us grateful for the occasional reminders that they are still, after all, little kids.
