Last night Paul put a pizza in the oven and set the timer for 20 minutes. A while later, Maya, noticing that the timer now said 3 minutes, exclaimed:
I have been waiting 17 long years for this pizza!
...further evidence that she inherited not only her Aunt Liz's intuitive math ability but also Kathy's penchant for hyperbole!

Great moments in thoracic surgery:
Dr. Bryn: OK, you can wake up now. I gave you an operation. I took your lungs out of your mouth. Here they are. I reached down with a wire and took them out.

Patient Paul: But how can I breathe and talk to you now?

Dr. Bryn: I gave you a new air system. These are your old lungs right here [holds them up], and your new lungs are inside you. They look like a big ball of fire. And here's the bad news: it is a big ball of fire!
And yes, her beside manner was about this matter-of-fact.

While baking cookies during last weekend's blizzard, Kathy asked the kids what 12+12 was. After they guessed 20 and 25, we told them the answer and explained that they could figure it out by adding 10+10 and 2+2. Kathy then asked what 11+11 was, and Maya immediately piped up "22."

We'd expected that she would have arrived at this answer by adding 10+10 and 1+1, but when we asked about her process, she said that she'd subtracted 2 from 24!

Today we got the best Valentine's Day presents ever. Spontaneously at bedtime, Bryn said to Kathy
Happy Valentine's Day. You're the best Mommy ever.
She then told Paul he was the best daddy ever. Maya, inspired, told Kathy that she was the best mommy in world and Paul that he was the best daddy in the world.

What more could we want out of life?

Last night Maya asked an interesting question:
How can water evaporate if there's gravity?
If anyone has a good answer, let us know!

Today's quote:
I have bruises all over me. I have so much fun!

Quoth Bryn:
If you're very famous, you get to be a statue. They stand you up and then they carve you.
Maya, who was quite upset at the time, found this pretty consoling.

Maya reveals her math prowess yet again:
Maya: Mommy, 2000 comes after 1999, right?
Kathy: Right.
Maya: If you have nine and you take away four, that makes five, right?
Kathy: Right.
Maya: Danae was born in 1995.
Kathy, amazed, asked Maya to explain how she came up with this answer.
Maya: We're five. We were born in 2000. Danae is five years older than me.
Kathy: Maya, you're really good at math.
Bryn: That's amazing.
When Maya saw that Kathy was taking notes, she asked that Kathy write "Maya did this math." Maya also wanted it to go on record that she didn't need to write down any of the steps she took to solve the problem and that she did it without any help.

However, in the spirit of "show your work," here's Paul's reconstruction of how Maya solved the problem (based on both her explanation to Kathy and her mention of how she also used the year 1990 as part of her process):
2000-5 = (2000-1)-4
= 1999-4
= (1990+9)-4
= 1990+(9-4)
= 1990+5
= 1995
A textbook example of the associative law!
