... This lupine variety, which we saw in a number of locations throughout the park, has a fine coating of silvery hairs on its leaves.

Evidently, these hairs serve at least two purposes, trapping a blanket of warm air around the leaves, and reflecting harmful UV radiation. We were told that the rich pigmentation also helps prevent UV damage, but it's not clear how that works.
